How NFC Tags Work

That is not much, but it is more than enough to store a URL, a unique identifier, or a short text string.
The most common NFC tag types for consumer use are NTAG213, NTAG215, and NTAG216. The numbers indicate increasing memory capacity. For vinyl tagging, NTAG215 is the sweet spot. It holds 504 bytes, which is plenty for a deep link to a specific record in an app. NTAG216 works too, with 888 bytes, but you will rarely need the extra space.
Tags come in different form factors. Stickers are the most common and the most useful for vinyl. They have an adhesive back, so you peel and stick. Some come as cards, keychains, or even wristbands, but for record sleeves, stickers are what you want.
Once data is written to a tag, it stays there. No power required. No maintenance. The data persists for years. You can also lock a tag after writing to prevent accidental overwrites, or leave it rewritable if you want to reassign it later.
NFC Meets Vinyl

Step 1: Buy NFC tags
Search Amazon for "NTAG215 NFC stickers." You will find dozens of options. A pack of 50 costs between $10 and $15. That is roughly $0.20 to $0.30 per tag. Some packs come with 100 or more, which brings the unit cost down even further. White stickers are the most common, but you can find clear ones if you want something less visible on the sleeve.
Step 2: Write a tag
Open Spinstack. Navigate to any record in your collection. Select the NFC option. The app prompts you to hold a blank NFC tag near the top of your iPhone (that is where the NFC reader sits). Where to Place NFC Tags
Placement matters. You want the tag somewhere accessible but not visually intrusive. Here are the three best options.
Inside the gatefold or inner sleeve area
This is the cleanest option. The tag is completely hidden. You tap through the jacket, and the NFC signal passes through cardboard without issue. The downside is that you need to know where the tag is to tap accurately. With practice, this becomes second nature.
On the spine
If your records are stored vertically (and they should be, per our organization guide), the spine is what you see most. A small tag on the spine lets you tap a record without even pulling it off the shelf. This is useful for quick lookups. "What pressing is this?" Tap. Answer.
On the outer protective sleeve
If you use clear polypropylene outer sleeves to protect your jackets, you can stick the tag on the outside of the protective sleeve rather than on the jacket itself. This keeps the original artwork completely untouched. If you ever sell the record, you remove the outer sleeve and the tag goes with it.
Avoid placing tags directly on the vinyl itself or on the label. The tag will not damage the record, but it adds thickness that can affect how the record sits in the sleeve. Keep tags on the jacket or outer sleeve.

This is the primary use case. You are standing at your shelf, holding a record, and you want to know something about it. When did you buy it? What did you pay? Is this the original pressing or the reissue? What condition did you grade it? Tap. All of it is right there.

Compatible Devices
NFC reading works on iPhone 7 and later. That covers every iPhone sold since 2016. If your phone can run Apple Pay, it can read NFC tags.
NFC writing (programming new tags) requires iPhone 7 or later as well, with iOS 13 or above. Spinstack handles the writing process within the app, so you do not need any third-party NFC writing tools.
